Editor LAWRENCEVILLE - The Brunswick County Board of Supervisors voted to submit an FY11 appropriation request for $1 million to Congressman Tom Perriello and Congressman J. Randy Forbes for partial funding for the Historic Courthouse Rehabilitation Project.

Editor LAWRENCEVILLE - William O. Weddington, 24, pleaded guilty to three counts of embezzlement and Chiante Lamar Owen, 34, pleaded guilty to five counts of embezzlement. Weddington was sentenced to 10 years in the state penitentiary for each count, all suspended, and ordered to perform 300 hours of community service by Aug. 30, 2010. Both were employees of the Dollar General Store. Owen was sentenced to 10 years for each count, all suspended, and ordered to perform 500 hours of community service by Feb. 18, 2011. They both were ordered to pay $4,000 in restitution to the Dollar General Store and both were barred from the property.

Editor LAWRENCEVILLE - At a budget work session on Monday night the Brunswick County School Board took an option to cut salaries for all school employees by 1.8 percent off the table. The savings would have been $287,355. An increase in insurance that totaled $130,000 will not be considered. Funding for the Governor's School put at $$58,500 will not be cut.

Editor LAWRENCEVILLE - On Thursday, Feb. 18 the Meherrin River Regional Jail Authority approved the PPEA contract for English Construction Company from Lynchburg to build the new Meherrin River Regional Jail subject to the approval of the three County Administrators and the Authority's attorney. Members of the team are Moseley Architects, Thompson Litton and the Timmons Group. The contract is for approximately $43 million. PPEA stands for Public-Private Education Facilities and Infrastructure Act of 2002. The Commonwealth's share of the total cost for the Meherrin River Regional Jail shall not exceed $32,189,469. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 18 at 3 p.m. at the Brunswick County Government Building, 100 Tobacco Street. The meeting is open to the public.

Editor LAWRENCEVILLE - The news for preparing the FY2010-2011 Brunswick County Public School budget got more disturbing when it was announced that Brunswick County is facing another reduction from the state totaling $184,116, bringing the total reduction to $786,414.

Editor LAWRENCEVILLE - A body believed to be Thomas Henry Taylor, 66, was found in a house fire on Monday, Feb. 15 at 411 Doyles Lake Road, Emporia, near the Brunswick/Greensville line.
