Editor LAWRENCEVILLE - Six families were recognized at the Believer's Center of the Future Academy, Inc. second annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community and Schools Awards Program for exemplifying "Service Beyond Self": the Mark Evans family, the Jarrett family, the Powell family, the Roberts family, the Satcher family, the Stith family and the Teasley family. The event was held at Saint Paul's College on Sunday, Jan. 15 recognizing the contributions of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Editor ALBERTA - The Meherrin River Regional Jail Authority approved the salary grades and ranges for the Meherrin River Regional Jail scheduled to open July 1. The authority will meet Thursday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. at Southside Virginia Community College for its regularly scheduled meeting to continue discussing the benefit package to be offered.

Editor LAWRENCEVILLE - On Tuesday, Jan. 17 Judge Allan Sharrett entered an order for the Alberta S. Harrison, Jr. Courthouse to be closed to the public at the end of business on Thursday, Jan. 19 and to remain closed until further order of the court because of ongoing problems with the heat and air conditioning system. On Thursday, Jan. 19 after a temporary boiler was installed and in proper working order heating the courthouse, and with plans in place to install a permanent boiler by Jan. 27, Judge Sharrett directed that the order be vacated meaning the courthouse remained opened to the public. The order further stated that if the temporary boiler malfunctions or should the permanent boiler not be installed by 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6 the courthouse shall once again be closed to public use. The courthouse was built in 1999.

Editor ALBERTA - After serving as Chief of the Alberta Volunteer Fire Department for 34 years, Tommy Johnson is stepping down transferring command to newly installed Chief Woody Daniel. Johnson will serve as Deputy Chief for 2012.
