Boydton ready to celebrate 200 years

Boydton - After countless hours spent on researching and planning, Boydton, the county seat, is ready to celebrate its 200th birthday. The Boydton Birthday Party will be held on Feb. 3, and formal festivities will begin at 2 p.m. Donna Ober, of Bicentennial Media, said everything is on schedule and they are looking for a great turnout.

Jordan to seek Ward 3 seat

Lisa Vaughan Jordan told The Enterprise this week that she is circulating a petition to have her name placed on the ballot for the Ward 3 South Hill Town Council seat being vacated by Councilman Chad Barbour, who confirmed for The Enterprise recently that he will not seek re-election when his current term of office is up.

Cognizant of the March deadline to file for this year’s municipal elections, South Hill Councilman Chad Barbour announced Friday that he will not be seeking another term.

Does prison land hold promise as future school site?

It’s often said that investing in schools and education helps minimize the need for future investment in prisons and other correctional facilities. An interesting twist came into play at the monthly meeting of the Mecklenburg County School Board Tuesday, when Trustee Dale Sturdifen wondered aloud about the possible benefits of securing the soon-to-close Mecklenburg Correctional Center property as a possible future construction site for a high school. Trustee Glenn Edwards said he thought Sturdifen might be on to something.

The topic of when to begin and end the school year is once again on the front burner for Mecklenburg County Public Schools. A survey is presently posted on the Division website (www.mcpsweb.org) seeking public input on the proposed 2012-2013 calendar.

Time, regulation on uranium sought

A day after Southern Virginia business leaders, medical professionals and legislators took their case against uranium mining to Richmond, Governor Bob McDonnell issued a press release calling on the General Assembly to “take no action to permit uranium mining during its 2012 session,” and the creation of a multi-agency workgroup to a site specific study and create preliminary regulation recommendations.
