The South Hill Town Council set into place a new Nuisance Abatement Policy that will provide the town a structure to deal with unsafe, dangerous, or unsanitary structures in the town.

BOYDTON — Line by line. That is the approach of the Mecklenburg County School Board as they search the budget for funds that will save teachers and school system staff jobs and ensure that the children of Mecklenburg County receive the education they deserve.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY — The South Hill YMCA finally has a new place to call home -the former South Hill Primary School. The nearly three year effort to obtain the facility came to a breakthrough on Monday when the Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the contract, deed and all other paperwork necessary for the former school to become the YMCA’s new home.

BASKERVILLE — The mother of the juvenile accidentally shot in the face in December 2008 was sentenced Thursday by the Mecklenburg County Circuit Court to 10 years for felony child neglect that resulted in a serious injury.

SOUTH HILL — The final former Lawrence Distributing Company employee has been sentenced nearly one year after being directly indicted by the grand jury for embezzlements related to nearly $600,000 in product and money that was taken from the South Hill drink distributor.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY — Candidates for the May local election have completed the necessary paperwork and records show that the Mayoral race for the Towns of Boydton and Chase City will be contested. Council seats in South Hill, Clarksville, Boydton and Chase City will have a competitive race and the Town of La Crosse is lacking a candidate to fill one Council seat.

RICHMOND — Local arts organizations are still trying to figure out how to survive in the wake of news last week that the Virginia Commission of the Arts (VCA) may be eliminated by 2011.

SOUTH HILL — The three former employees of a local drink distributor who pleaded guilty to embezzlement were sentenced recently in court. Each will serve one-year of a 20-year sentence and jointly pay back more than $373,000.

BOYDTON — Those that spoke at the Mecklenburg County School Board public input session Monday described the current budget situation as “bleak,” “dreary,” and one that was “cutting, cutting, cutting.”

MECKLENBURG COUNTY — The filing deadline for local elections ends on Tuesday. Currently County Registrar Bert Carter urges those who wish to seek a position with the local government in the upcoming May 4 election to file the necessary paperwork as soon as possible before 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2.
