Suffolk man charged with beating daughter with belt

SUFFOLK A 32-year-old man has been charged with child abuse and neglect after police say he beat his 9-year-old daughter with a belt earlier this week.

Police in Portsmouth have identified a man whose charred body was found inside a burning Jeep Cherokee on Tuesday, and detectives now believe his death is related to another homicide the same day at his home just a few blocks away.

NORFOLK A bullet grazed one person in a shooting this morning outside a Granby Street club. The shooting was reported about 1:30 a.m. outside Velvet Lounge after a fight that began inside the business continued out on the street, according to Karen Parker-Chesson, police spokeswoman. A bullet struck a man, who suffered a superficial wound.

NEWPORT NEWS Former Virginia Tech quarterback Maurice DeShazo is among hundreds of men arrested in a nationwide sting on prostitution and other sex crime charges. DeShazo is charged with soliciting prostitution. Media outlets report DeShazo was arrested along with 14 other men in Newport News.

NORFOLK A man convicted in a drunken driving crash that killed three passengers is scheduled to be sentenced today in Circuit Court. Craig Watson, 32, was convicted of three counts of aggravated involuntary manslaughter for a violent vehicle crash after a night of partying at the Oceanfront. A jury recommended a 25-year sentence.
