Pedestrian dies after being hit along Chesapeake road

CHESAPEAKE
A pedestrian was pronounced dead after being hit by a truck this morning in the 900 block of N. George Washington Hwy. in the Deep Creek area.

At 7:30 a.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation was reporting the following traffic issues:
James River Bridge
A lift is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
In Chesapeake, the city reports the following issues:
Gilmerton Bridge
Lifts are scheduled for 8:30 and 9:30 a.m.
Steel Bridge
A lift is scheduled for 8 a.m.

PORTSMOUTH
A body was found inside a burning car this morning in the 400 block of Florida Ave.
Dispatchers received a report about a car on fire shortly before 5:30 a.m., said Detective Jan Westerbeck, police spokeswoman. After firefighters extinguished the blaze, they found the body.
No additional details were immediately available about the body.

Jury selection is set to resume in the case of a former University of Virginia lacrosse player accused of killing his ex-girlfriend.
George Huguely V of Chevy Chase, Md., pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges on Monday. It was his first court appearance since his arrest in 2010, when he was ordered held without bond.

Mayor Will Sessoms Jr. will present the Virginia Beach Lifesaving Award to Wallis “Wally” Damon Jr. today.
The award will be presented at 3 p.m. at City Hall Building 1 in the City Council Chamber, a city news release says.

Jennifer Wester is a spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry. Her name was incorrect in a story ("Golf course cited over worker's death") on Page 1 of Saturday's Hampton Roads section. Also, Cahoon Plantation golf course has 15 days to contest the citation from when the citation was received. The story misstated the deadline.
