Portsmouth School Board plans external audit

PORTSMOUTH The School Board plans to have an external auditor review the division’s finances and spending practices in light of an accounting dispute. The review comes on the heels of the suspension of the division’s budget and finance director, Meera Phaltankar.
Suffolk assessed values inch up after flat half-decade

SUFFOLK Real estate assessments citywide went up 1.5 percent in 2013, the first increase in six years, with residential property leading the way. The number of property sales also went up for the second year in a row, City Assessor Jean Jackson said in an annual report.

It should be mostly sunny today, with a chance of showers late tonight and into Saturday morning. Lows tonight should be near 60 degrees. On Saturday, it should be mostly sunny with his near 70 degrees. Lows Saturday night should be in the mid-40s.
I-64 west crash near Granby St. in Norfolk cleared

A multi-vehicle crash that slowed traffic on westbound Interstate 64 near Granby Street has been cleared. Shortly before 9 p.m. traffic was backed up about a half-mile, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. All but one westbound lane was closed to traffic while emergency responders work in the area. The crash was cleared before 10 p.m.

RALEIGH, N.C. North Carolina health officials say four more people have died from flu-related illness. The numbers released Thursday come one week after the previous report showed no one died in the state. For the season, the death toll from flu-related illnesses in North Carolina is at 96. The season began last October.

NORFOLK Albert Wayne Benton, a former public works employee, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor attempted embezzlement charge Thursday. Benton, who retired in November as a street maintenance supervisor, offered to save a homeowner money if he paid him in cash to replace the concrete apron from the street to the man's driveway, according to a stipulation of facts.

A woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash that occurred shortly before 11 a.m. south of the inspection station on the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel Thursday. The accident happened near the College Drive exit, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya said in an email.
