NORFOLK
An 11th-hour School Board rift over the budget ended Friday night when the board deadlocked on a motion to ask for more city funding.
Board chairman Kirk Houston Sr. said the 3-3 vote means a $299.5 million budget request passed in March will stand as approved. The City Council is slated to approve the city's $1.1 billion budget, including spending for the schools, on Tuesday.

A Maryland man pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud in connection with the purchase of real estate on the Eastern Shore.
Christopher G. DeBlauw, 44, of Millersville, Md. faces up to 30 years in prison when he is sentenced in August, a news release from the U.S. attorney's office in the Eastern District of Virginia said.

ROANOKE
A medical transport helicopter had a close call with three military jets Thursday night in Rockbridge County, just north of Lexington.
A pilot and three crew members were on board the Carilion Clinic craft. They were returning after dropping off a patient at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, according to Carilion spokesman Eric Earnhart.

A man wanted in connection with a homicide that occurred in March was extradited from Georgia and charged.
Darren Maurice Johnson, 45, of Hampton was charged with murder, abduction and carjacking, a Hampton police news release said.
