The owner of a Newport News restaurant was charged Friday with stabbing one of his cooks after the two men got into an argument, according to police.

Cassie Thurston lounged on Chic's Beach, sipping an energy drink Friday afternoon and keeping a close watch on her 4-year-old daughter, Cassidy, playing nearby, not far from a scattering of orange and white cigarette butts abandoned in the sand.
"She's always picking them up," Thurston said of the butts. "She's a little girl. She doesn't know."

The westbound lanes will be closed from 5:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday for maintenance work.
Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel
Two left westbound lanes are blocked by a disabled vehicle on the Hampton River bridge. Traffic was backed up past Bay Avenue in Norfolk.

A disabled work truck has caused the temporary closure of two lanes on Interstate 64 westbound near the Hampton River Bridge, Virginia Department of Transportation officials said. Traffic is currently backed up to Mallory Street. It is also impacting traffic at the HRBT.

Virginia State Police and the families of fallen troopers will gather in suburban Richmond to remember those who died in the line of duty.
The memorial scheduled today will pay special recognition to Trooper Adam M. Bowen. He died in June 2011 while responding to a call to assist with a criminal investigation in King George County.
