Chesapeake schools, police at odds over searches

When a police officer started investigating whether a gym teacher assaulted a 12-year-old Jolliff Middle School student last month, he hit a roadblock: The school would not give him a copy of surveillance footage from a security camera.
Not without a search warrant.

Police are holding a town meeting tonight in the department’s Central Precinct.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Point Plaza Suites at City Center, 956 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., police wrote in a news release.
Police will discuss crime trends, crime prevention ideas and community partnerships.

Richmond's top official for justice services said the city needs to "go back to square one" before it considers reopening the juvenile detention center.
Fire damaged a unit in an Old Southwest apartment building early Sunday night, though no one was hurt, Roanoke authorities said.The incident began about 8:05 p.m. in the six-unit building on the northwest corner of Franklin Road and Albemarle Avenue Southwest. Flames were visible at a second-floor window when firefighters arrived, Roanoke Fire-EMS Battalion Chief Dale Barker said.
Spinning tops did battle on Sunday at Garst Mill Park; it's a new spin on an ancient toy that many kids are getting into.Garst Mill Park in Roanoke County is home to basketball and tennis courts, a playground, a creek and swings. But on Sunday afternoon, one group of kids instead spun tops in a plastic stadium set in the grass.
