Shockoe baseball stadium plan wins initial backing 6-3
The Richmond City Council chose Monday to press ahead with the plan for a baseball stadium in Shockoe Bottom, but the 6-3 vote leaves little room for error as Mayor Dwight C. Jones sets out to finalize the project’s details.
Monday’s vote, which occurred around 11 p.m. after a marathon session, was not the final decision, but it was the first major test for the development plan unveiled by the mayor late last year.

PORTSMOUTH At least 15 valuable bronze vases have been stolen this month from grave markers at Evergreen Memorial Park, police said Friday. The first reported theft at the cemetery occurred between April 7 and 9, a news release said. A relative found five vases missing from the markers of family.

VIRGINIA BEACH One person is dead and another was taken to the hospital Friday in a double shooting in the 2600 block of South Kings Road. The two people knew each other, said Officer Tonya Borman, a Police Department spokeswoman. Police believe this was an isolated incident, and they are not looking for a suspect. The shooting happened shortly after 2:30 p.m.
