MC schools brace for big cuts

Local schools may receive close to $1 million less state funding this coming fiscal year, according to officials. Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine recently announced a revised two-year budget plan that attempts to close a $2.9 billion shortfall due to lower than expected state income numbers, according to recent media reports.


Semiannual county taxes OK’d

Madison County’s real estate tax bill deadline has been bumped up by six months after all. By June 5 of each year – starting in 2009 – taxpayers must now fork over half of their typical real estate tax bill. The county will continue to collect other taxes – including personal property, machinery and tools and merchant’s capital taxes – only once a year, with bills due Dec. 5.


MC radio fix could cost $3.6 million

Madison County needs to plan for an upgrade to its emergency radio system within the next five years, according to officials. And nationwide telecommunications company Motorola is encouraging local officials to act quickly by offering upgrade price cuts if they sign a contract to improve the county’s public safety radio network by the year’s end.


McCain T-shirt case continued

Leigh Purdum refused to cover her John McCain T-shirt Nov. 4 at her Brightwood precinct polling place. On Dec. 1, warrant in hand, she turned herself in for arrest. The American Civil Liberties Union believes Purdum is the only person arrested as a result of the Virginia State Board of Elections ruling in October that banned political clothing at polling locations.


Citizens blast semiannual taxes

Proposed changes to the county’s tax collection process came under fire at a Dec. 9 Madison County Board of Supervisors public hearing. The majority of the 10 county residents who spoke questioned whether there would be benefits to changing various aspects of the way the county collects taxes.

Many say low-income senior housing is needed in Madison County, but residents of Courthouse Mountain Road don’t believe their neighborhood is the ideal place for it. Although a plan to develop a piece of property along the road has already been approved by officials – it’s come back to the county once again with some proposed revisions.

MC hoop girls seek wins

The Madison County girls basketball team hopes the second half of its season will be a complete turnaround from the first half. Through the first nine games of the season, the Mountaineer hoop girls are 1-8 with their lone 42-31 win at home against Luray’s Bulldog girls. The other games have not gone according to Madison Coach Katherine Johnson’s plan.


Madison dominates hardwood

Madison County’s hardwood dominance continues, as the still-undefeated Mountaineers climb to 8-0 after pulling away from the Mustangs of Monticello Dec. 20 to get a big 63-51 win over the Group AA-Jefferson District foe. The game was tied at 26 at the halftime break, but then Madison Coach Tim Taylor took his team to a triangle-and-two defense to stop big Monticello scorers Hines Banks and Mark Brady. The new and non-practiced defense worked as Madison took the lead and never looked back in the third quarter, outscoring Monticello 20-9.


MC hoop boys stay undefeated

Madison County continued its roll in boys basketball as the Mountaineers moved ahead to 5-0 after toppling larger rivals William Monroe of Greene County and Orange County. It also added a win over Page County. Madison controlled all three games and put multiple players in double figures in the games as well.
