Local schools may receive close to $1 million less state funding this coming fiscal year, according to officials.
Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine recently announced a revised two-year budget plan that attempts to close a $2.9 billion shortfall due to lower than expected state income numbers, according to recent media reports.

Madison County’s real estate tax bill deadline has been bumped up by six months after all. By June 5 of each year – starting in 2009 – taxpayers must now fork over half of their typical real estate tax bill. The county will continue to collect other taxes – including personal property, machinery and tools and merchant’s capital taxes – only once a year, with bills due Dec. 5.
MC radio fix could cost $3.6 million

Madison County needs to plan for an upgrade to its emergency radio system within the next five years, according to officials. And nationwide telecommunications company Motorola is encouraging local officials to act quickly by offering upgrade price cuts if they sign a contract to improve the county’s public safety radio network by the year’s end.
McCain T-shirt case continued

Leigh Purdum refused to cover her John McCain T-shirt Nov. 4 at her Brightwood precinct polling place. On Dec. 1, warrant in hand, she turned herself in for arrest. The American Civil Liberties Union believes Purdum is the only person arrested as a result of the Virginia State Board of Elections ruling in October that banned political clothing at polling locations.

Proposed changes to the county’s tax collection process came under fire at a Dec. 9 Madison County Board of Supervisors public hearing. The majority of the 10 county residents who spoke questioned whether there would be benefits to changing various aspects of the way the county collects taxes.

Many say low-income senior housing is needed in Madison County, but residents of Courthouse Mountain Road don’t believe their neighborhood is the ideal place for it. Although a plan to develop a piece of property along the road has already been approved by officials – it’s come back to the county once again with some proposed revisions.
