Judge may reduce jury awards in Virginia Tech case
The jury awarded $4 million per plaintiff, but that is expected to be reduced to the $100,000 each allowed by state law.
ROCKY MOUNT -- After weeks of dueling motions, Judge William Alexander is expected next week to reduce multimillion-dollar jury awards brought against the state for Virginia Tech's handling of the April 16, 2007, shootings.

Sputtering in the Atlantic Ocean about 180 miles off the coast of South Carolina is a tropical storm called Alberto that is of no consequence.

Forecasters do not expect the storm to make landfall or otherwise threaten Atlantic Seaboard communities; they expect it to drift off into the ocean later this week. Yet the big question for Hampton Roads residents who rode out Hurricane Irene last August — and many other storms in years past — is whether Alberto signifies the onset of an intense 2012 Atlantic hurricane season.

A police officer shot a man after a struggle Monday night.
About 7:23 p.m., a male officer working extra duty in uniform became involved in a foot pursuit in the 800 block of 36th St., Newport News police spokesman Lou Thurston said. About three minutes later, shots were fired and police received a call for a person down and extra help required.
