VIRGINIA BEACH Police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide over the holiday weekend that left a 71-year-old woman and her son dead. About 9 p.m. Sunday, a family member called police and asked them to check on the welfare of Michaelene Martin, 71, who lived in the 1600 block of Nader St., according to a news release from the Police Department.

NORFOLK When undercover federal agents arrested Alan Paul Strieper at the Norfolk airport in February, they found in his car all the supplies needed for kidnapping, and maybe even killing, a young child: rope, tape, rubber gloves, bleach, sponges and a stuffed Elmo doll. Authorities said the agents probably saved a little boy's life that day.
