Finally Some Good News: The thinking behind numbering our days I live in a small pet cemetery. I did not choose to live in a pet cemetery; it was an accident. While building a garden shed, I stumbled upon several half-buried grave markers. Altogether, I found three pieces of granite with pet names and dates of birth and death on each one. STRICTLY OBSERVING: Getting your kicks On June 12, I attended the Marquee Cinemas promotion of new film The Karate Kid.nbsp; I must admit I was reluctant to review this film, as I feared a modern-day remake of the 1984 classic film of the same name would prove to be the recipe for a surefire did.nbsp; Not only was a sorely proven wrong, but it is my opinion that the latest cinematic rendition of the martial…
SENIOR MOMENT: Ode to Ole Green It was one of the hottest days of summer as my husband and I loaded our old farm truck and headed to one of our farthest pastures to check the cattle and perhaps pick some blackheart cherries. It was one of those days that retiree farmers enjoy and a definite break from the rigorous routine of cutting and baling hay and clipping pastures. We affectionately refer to our…
MOUNTAIN VIEW: Miracle Plays How lovely it is to step off the beaten track. Piney Woods Philosopher: A matter of temperature Piney, who with She Who Must Be Obeyed, was soon to return to home in Rural Retreat, Marion and points there about was interested in studying the question of temperature.nbsp; How hot or cold is it in Southwest Virginia? The answer is easy to find in these days of computers… enter the Zip Code and, oops, up pops 81 degrees! Possum Philosophy: Life is getting stranger every day Lately, I’ve kind of been in the mood Jerry Garcia and his buddies must have been in when they wrote my favorite Grateful Dead song. When you think about it, we live in a strange, strange time, and it seems to get stranger every day. Lots of things puzzle me and unfortunately the guy who often made sense of them for me (in a strange way), George Carlin, passed away two…
Finally Some Good News: Familial DNA may work in court, but not with God Years ago, when my oldest son was young, he would occasionally declare, “Prince Charles and Princess Diana are my real parents, and they are going to send for me.” He only said that when he was disappointed with his own parents and the sorry lot that life had thrown him. That rarely happened more than twice a day. Still, at those moments I was sympathetic, offering…
Piney Woods Philosopher: Exploring the origins of our love of pets Dogs and cats! And sometimes a horse, pony, a pig, a mouse, etc. American pets! Piney and She Who Must Be Obeyed in their 41 years together had had mostly dogs and cats, one rabbit, and a pet mouse or two. But Piney was interested in the fact that Americans had gone able-sugar (an old WWII term!) over all kinds of pets, even snakes and lizards. Why was this past 20 years…
Possum Philosophy: Homage to homegrown tomatoes I can’t say I am a fan of singer-songwriter Guy Clark. In fact until I ran across this song a couple of years ago, I had never heard of him. I still haven’t heard him sing. But, I will have to give Brother Clark credit. He knows what he’s talking about when he sings about homegrown tomatoes (or as most of us residents of Virginia’s lovely Southern Highlands usually…
Finally Some Good News: Our fascination with vampires and blood Q: Who is a vampire likely to fall in love with?
A: The girl necks door.
I never dreamed there were so many vampire jokes. OK, I never dreamed there were so many bad vampire jokes. Yet, it is not only jokes, but there is so much vampire mania. People are fascinated with vampires. Page 1 of 21 pages 1 2 3 > Last » |
