Hicks honored for 41 years of firefighting
Don Hicks was driving from a ballgame back into Chilhowie on Highway 11 when he saw flames around the chimney of a house in the west end of town.

Marion man charged with shooting into house
Apparently upset that no one would go for more beer when his supply was gone, a Smyth County man began shooting into his cousin’s house, police said. Lewis Steward Jones, 23, of Marion was arrested last Tuesday by the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office.

County asks for extension agent’s post to be filled immediately
Smyth County supervisors adopted a resolution Thursday in support of Virginia Cooperative Extension officials’ filling the extension agent position vacated Jan. 1 by the retirement of Walter Robinson. Robinson held the job for 28 years.


Gallery’s lease up for renewal
Appalachian Spirit Artists Association’s free lease of the building housing its gallery on Main Street in Marion is up for renewal this month. While former council member Ken Heath recalled Monday the original lease three years ago was granted with no public hearing, the renewal request triggered a brief debate in the town council chamber about proper protocol.
United Way exceeds goal
The United Way of Smyth County surpassed its goal by 5 percent, raising $195,334 in a campaign that had a goal of $185,000.


Institute’s adolescent, geriatric units on the block
State Senator Phillip Puckett (D-38th) believes Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute’s adolescent unit, whose funding is proposed for elimination in Senate and House versions of the budget, stands about a “50-50 chance or a little less” of surviving in some form.
