Fourth of July field fire reported
Where there’s smoke there’s fire, but sometimes it’s difficult to find. That was the case last Sunday evening for the Wytheville Fire Department.
“The town was covered in smoke,” noted fire chief Ronnie King. “Everybody knew there was a fire, but we couldn’t find it.”
Three plead guilty to federal drug charges
Three people, one of them a former police officer, pleaded guilty in federal court on Friday to charges related to the distribution of methamphetamine.
John Daniel Cantrell, 25, and Kelly Ann Porter, 25, both of Max Meadows, and Christopher Franklin Bond, 32, of Austinville, each waived their right to indictment and instead pleaded guilty, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Lions Charity Carnival begins Monday
Paul Brewster can recall when the swings and Ferris wheel were the major rides at the Wytheville Lions Club Charity Carnival. The Wytheville resident also remembers when the carnival was held in what is now the parking lot of the Wytheville Municipal Building.

Since traveling to its new home in a tackle box full of lake water, a young amphibian with a hankering for crickets – and apparently local celebrity – has been making the rounds around the county to show off its extra set of limbs where limbs shouldn’t be.
