A civilized little event at Booker T. Washington National Monument gave family members a chance to dress up, sip tea and even soak up a little history.

A brief sampling of the history lessons dispensed during the Mother's Day tea party held Sunday at Booker T. Washington National Monument in Hardy:

The man who goes by Bobby Thompson used many aliases; an unusual one was key to the hunt.

CLEVELAND -- He had at least $1 million in cash, believed to be from donors who thought they were giving to the U.S. Navy Veterans Association. But he lived like a pauper, stocking up on beef jerky and bumming meals at homeless shelters.

As a student, John Alerding helped research insect wings for drone applications, but as an Air Force officer he hopes to fly fighter jets.

LEXINGTON -- Unmanned, intelligence-gathering aircraft might someday be as small as a moth.

"They're going to be able to get into high-value targets and observe and listen and report back," said Col. Joe Blandino, professor of mechanical engineering at the Virginia Military Institute.
