Va Senate approves 1-gun-a-month repeal

The Virginia Senate passed legislation Monday repealing the 1993 one-handgun-a-month law, all but ensuring the demise of a statute enacted after the state became a supplier of guns used in crimes in New York and other major East Coast cities.

Candidates for the town council say they want to work to bring in more industry and jobs.

Jobs are already the buzzword of candidates and potential candidates in Rocky Mount, even with town council elections still months away.

Incumbent council members Ann Love and Gregg Walker have said they plan to seek re-election; Billie Wayne Stockton, a retired Franklin County Sheriff's Office chief deputy, will seek his first elected office, and Ben Pinckard Sr., former Franklin County commissioner of revenue, mayor and councilman, said he is "seriously considering" seeking office.


Train strikes Christiansburg woman - www.roanoke.com

A Christiansburg woman walking her dog on railroad tracks was struck by a train Sunday evening, according to a town spokeswoman.

The incident, which happened near Railroad Street shortly before 6 p.m., is being investigated by Norfolk Southern Corp., Becky Wilburn said Sunday. The Christiansburg Rescue Squad and Christiansburg police responded.

Accident victim extricated from truck

Fire and rescue personnel extricated an accident victim from his wrecked pickup truck Sunday night on U.S. 340 in Crimora, after the truck ran off the road and struck a tree while heading north.
